How to Evaluate a Blackjack Table Professionally
A Blackjack table is not favorable or unfavorable in absolute terms. Its quality depends on the method the player intends to use.
For players who use only basic strategy, a 3:2 payout, favorable rules and a pace that limits the number of negative-EV hands are essential.
For a card counter, penetration, the ability to vary bets, the number of players, speed, the type of shuffle and the stability of conditions become decisive.
Players using Shuffle Tracking, hole-card play or other forms of advantage play must also evaluate specific operating procedures that may be irrelevant to an ordinary counter.
Penetration: Important for Whom?
Penetration indicates the proportion of the shoe dealt before the shuffle: decks dealt ÷ total decks.
In a six-deck shoe, if 4.5 decks are dealt and 1.5 remain behind the cut card, penetration is 75%.
For the basic-strategy player, deeper penetration does not directly reduce the average edge per hand. For the counter, however, it allows more cards to be observed, produces more extreme true counts and normally increases EV and SCORE, all else being equal.

Hands per Hour and EV
Speed must be evaluated together with the sign of expected value.
Negative-EV player: fewer hands mean a lower hourly expected loss.
Positive-EV advantage player: more hands can increase expected hourly profit, provided the average advantage, accuracy and ability to place the correct wagers remain unchanged.
The main factors are the number of players, dealer speed, decision speed, shuffle time, use of multiple spots and operational interruptions.
A very fast table is not automatically better: it can reduce counting accuracy, increase true-count errors and make bet variation more conspicuous.
Evaluating the Initial Edge
Before considering penetration, the rules must be checked:
- Blackjack pays 3:2;
- S17 is preferable to H17;
- DAS is preferable to NDAS;
- doubling allowed on any initial two-card hand;
- late surrender, when available;
- RSA and resplitting options;
- hole card, peek, OBO or classic ENHC;
- number of decks;
- treatment of split Aces;
- no mandatory side bets or commissions.
Excellent penetration does not necessarily compensate for a 6:5 payout. First calculate the initial edge; then evaluate whether the operating conditions make it possible to overcome it.
Continuous Shuffler and Automatic Shuffler
CSM — Continuous Shuffling Machine: discarded cards are progressively reinserted into the device. The composition does not evolve as it does in a traditional shoe and normal counting cannot be applied.
ASM — Automatic Shuffling Machine: while one shoe is being played, a second set of cards is shuffled automatically. The shoe in play remains finite and can be counted normally.
An ASM speeds up the shoe change but does not eliminate penetration. A CSM, however, radically changes the possibility of applying card counting and Shuffle Tracking. For the basic-strategy player it can slightly reduce the edge per hand, but the greater number of hands tends to increase hourly expected loss.
Full Table or Heads-Up
With fewer players, more personal hands are dealt per hour and the counter can use a larger share of the favorable phases of the shoe.
A crowded table slows the game and causes other participants to consume more cards before the player can place a wager. It may, however, provide more time for calculations and a less conspicuous presence.
The choice must consider penetration, actual speed, personal hands per shoe, number of spots that can be controlled, operating accuracy and the level of attention generated.
Minimum Bet, Maximum Bet and Usable Spread
A table with excellent rules may be unusable if the minimum bet is too high for the bankroll, the maximum does not permit the required spread, multiple hands cannot be opened, or the casino restricts wagers after significant changes.
In card counting it is not enough to know the nominal maximum. It is necessary to establish which spread can actually be used and what volatility it produces. Increasing the spread tends to increase the advantage, but also variance, risk of ruin and visibility.
Mid-Shoe Entry and Back-Counting
Check whether it is permitted to enter after the shoe has begun, remain without betting, leave and re-enter the table, open a second or third hand and use different limits during the shoe.
These conditions may be of little importance to a flat bettor, but decisive for a counter who wants to concentrate volume only in favorable phases.
A Good Condition Must Be Repeatable
Penetration may change from dealer to dealer, between different shifts, according to the number of players, by pit decision, after a bet change or following replacement of the shuffle procedure.
The table must be observed over several shoes. One favorable penetration does not prove that the condition is stable.

Professional Table Checklist
Rules: 3:2 or 6:5, S17/H17, DAS, RSA, surrender, hole card/OBO/ENHC and number of decks.
Shoe: decks behind the cut card, average penetration, CSM/ASM/manual shuffle and stability.
Operations: hands per hour, players, mid-shoe entry, multiple spots, minimum, maximum and spread that can actually be used.
Economics: hourly EV, standard deviation, bankroll, risk of ruin, costs and comps. The best table is the one with the best relationship among expected value, risk, capital and operational sustainability.
The mathematical starting point remains the house edge determined by the rules.
